That's part of it. The other part is that instead of making it out of steel, they went with pollution absorbing concrete in order to be more artsy and progressive. Either one would have been fine, but they went for both, and now this is the result. That's not a knock on the concrete either.

yah cracking isn't an issue with concrete... I have an unrelated degree in engineering, and it's obvious why this bridge failed. The design was extremely poor. If you could magically whisk the bridge in place, then it would have been fine. The problem was it was impossible to move something that fragile into place.
