I think you can interpret this as not relying on friends. Have them, don't put them in positions of power cause that doesn't work out as you read. But having a strong social game is important for social proof. Have friends that you enjoy, and can open up to (these are your true friends) but don't be a afraid to have friends around who you aren't as close with

Unless you are physically in pain(doing something wrong) it's fine to work through your soreness. Stretch before and after your workout. Soreness will go away in a few weeks after your body gets more used to the movements
