3	Conscription ends in Germany This is mostly correct. But: the amount of time to serve steadily decreased to 6 months in the end. It still meant a wasted year, because most university programs only allow new students once a year. The same is true for most other forms of education. In the last years not everyone was required to serve. They randomly picked the amount of people they wanted to have.
