You said fathers are "just" protective of their daughters, but people often mistake a mother being just as protective of her son as being overbearing or controlling. I disagree. Mothers generally teach independence AND coddle either sex about the same, and fathers primarily coddle their daughters whilst teaching more independence to their son.
