They lack the wiring That has to be one of the most vague and meaningless sentences ever. And rote memorization on it's own in your "old-fashioned education" methods is absolutely useless. What good is it to mindlessly memorize facts for a test and then not be able to connect them in any meaningful way to other issues. You would be surprised what students can "be wired to do" given proper instruction and support. You do them a great disservice by suggesting that they simply can't.

Who said anything about teaching bulk detail? We're supposed to be teaching the methods of inquiry so that they can think critically and guide their own learning. However, facts and details still need to be taught as they still are necessary.

Trust me, we're trying. We have to wait for all the older teachers who were brought up on the school of rote memorization to retire before you'll see drastic change in the way things are done. Rote memorization is becoming a dirty word for teachers in training.

Actually, it makes me feel good to see this getting some attention. I think I had a strong case for rape my freshman year of college with some girl, but I never said anything to anyone but my friends who laughed it off. Still bugs me to this day.
