I don't know if you're looking for a categorical answer, but I think the article makes a good point given the context. If the frame and interaction gets to the point where you're both invested in each other, or even if you just feel like it, sure, call it a date. Be aware of the implications of the word – you should only use it if you want those implications to apply. If you're just trying to get laid, "date" is not a good word.
