My advice? You're the only friend you've got. I only recently came to this conclusion myself. Treat yourself gently, because no one else will. You can tear yourself down all you want, and the world will still tear you down even more. The thing is, you actually have control over what you do. It's a mindset thing. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not a surefire solution or anything, but "How was your day?" typically is a dry question that leads to a mundane conversation. I wouldn't suggest using it when first talking to a girl.
