There are so many reasons that could explain this. I have my own personal theory that I'll explain in a moment. But firstly, physical abuse isn't the only type and it's hardly always the most harmful. It's a bad idea to solely look at physical abuse as many other kinda exist. Since the inception of social and child psychology it's been pretty well known in the psychological community that abuse tends to result in aggressive tendencies and abusive patterns later in life. It's pretty common and has been widely studied.
