While I’m still pretty young (28), sometimes I wish I had found all this out before becoming a parent with my soon to be ex-husband. I could have moved wherever I wanted, started whatever I wanted. Now I’m stuck in the Midwest for the time being. :/ But I love my son. I know everyone says their child is smart, but at two years old my son is using words like “Interesting” and “Curious.” He also knows how to count in French and several other words. This whole thing has felt like a detour from the …

Yup! That’s why I’m trying to set an example for my son of what he should accept. I refuse to set footsteps before him that don’t lead to healthy and emotionally safe relationships!

I think it was the culture we were raised in. They raised us to be pickmes and then were furious when we picked someone who was clearly bad for us. Uhm hello! What did you expect after raising me on “Girl meets guy who is jerk, but she makes him better” garbage?

Women should really be scared of early marriage with an abusive ass hole. Trust me. Made that mistake and married at 19.

Ouch I’m so sorry!! The whole “making a big move while crying” bit is so very common. They want to have their cake and eat it too. I feel like the bad guy for demanding he take full accountability for what he’s done AND that he change. I’ve been gaslit for so long I believed I was the problem until recently. My therapist has been trying to get me to see the unhealthy for a couple years. I think she’s relieved I finally do.

I wish I hadn’t been so naive in college. During school he almost always kissed a new girl before breaking up with the last one. As far as I know he hasn’t actually cheated on me, but he toes the line and honestly, the lying and manipulation is enough for me to say “Nope. Can’t do this, sorry. I won’t live like this for the rest of my life. Not when there’s so much more out there.”

It is so disappointing to desperately want someone to love us, to work for years to prove that we’re “worthy” only to have them reject over and over until we lose ourselves and give up. I took it as an insult when he waited until I kicked him out to change his tune. I said “bullshit. You’re like a child who waited until his mother counted to three to shape up just so you wouldn’t get in trouble. That’s not how you love someone.” Now whenever he says anything that sounds guilt trippy, manipulativ…

Thank you! Mine isn’t violent, thank goodness, just sneaky and manipulative. Mostly plays the victim card and doesn’t fight for me, even when he says he does. It’s extremely disappointing to have a failed marriage at only 27. But at least I didn’t waste all of my youth on him.

Thank you! Yeah since he moved out, home life has been much easier, minus the single parenting. My home is cleaner, my time is spent wiser and my stress level is slowly reducing. You know it’s bad when you instantly tense up the moment he swings by to pick up our kid. It’s hard when that’s intermittently interrupted with good memories from the past. It can get confusing, but thank God I kept a journal all these years. Keeps what he’s done at the forefront so I remember why I’m taking the steps I…

I’m a little scared, but I talk to women who got out and they are sooo much happier. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a healthy, loving relationship before and the prospect of finding that is pretty exciting. But it requires two things; first, that I leave this toxic marriage and second, that I’m comfortable with never being with someone again. I’m working very hard to be healthy inside and out for my own sake, not someone else’s.

Married for 8 years total. Found out about the lying and other stuff 4 years ago. Gave him more chances than he should have had. I wanted to be absolutely sure I gave it every chance of working out, but then I joined a support group of women who stayed for decades and are just now leaving. I thought “no WAY am I wasting my life waiting! If I stay I’m teaching him he can have all the good stuff with no real effort. I respect myself too much to stay.” Not quite out yet (and we have a 2 year old to…

This is exactly what I told him. “You had 4 years. I asked for the bare minimum even, and you could have chosen me in those four years but you didn’t. So no, I don’t feel like giving you more time. I don’t owe you anything. You took everything from me. I’m not sorry for taking it all back.” 👑 Edit: wow thank you for the gold! My first award ever!!

Ugh flying monkeys are the worst. Yeah mine wants me to be careful who I tell about his stuff (not the kind of things you’d talk about in mixed company if you know what I mean) and it’s frustrating when people treat you like the separation was a “it takes two to tango” affair. Like, no Karen, I didn’t ask my husband to step outside my marriage and lie to me about it....multiple times. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exactly! My S.O. Had me brainwashed into thinking he was just helpless and couldn’t remember stuff. Really? For 10 years? Meanwhile here I am not only remembering to do stuff, but doing 100% of the mental load and physical load of house running. If I’m just going to do it alone anyway, might as well be single while I’m at it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ so sick of abusive men!

Yeah that pissed me off. Dude, she’s paying 125% of the court ordered support. That’s not deadbeat. And she was clear from the start that she didn’t want the kid. I’d suggest adoption before abortion, but since you willingly took him on before a judge, you’ve got no cards here. You asked for this. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Yeah the ladies in my group keep saying how happy they are that figured it out so young. Now I have time to start over and IF I want another life partner, now I know how to pick one who will go above and beyond for me, just like I did. It’s infuriating to be a catch and to do everything I can to make my husbands life special and easier, only to have him lie, cheat, manipulate and take me for granted. And then silent treatment me! It’s f*king ridiculous.

I can’t recommend that podcast enough. Please go binge the show as soon as possible. It’s what made my crazy would with my partner finally make sense. Nothing else made the pieces fit. I finally realized I was in an abusive relationship for the past ten years and he had just been trying to get away with murder and let me think I was the crazy one. Glad I know the truth now. Wish I would have listened to the podcast sooner!

Yep! I’m 27 and in a support group with other women dealing with betrayal trauma and cheating husbands. I’m the youngest one there and they are SO happy for me that I figured it out sooner than they did. Their marriages range from 14 to 35 years and they are STILL with their husbands. Chump Lady, Betrayal Trauma Recovery podcast and FDS are 100% responsible for me realizing my self worth, taking back my power and not putting up with shit anymore! So glad I found them!

Thank you! _^ ❤️ It’s part of my leveling up: realizing I don’t want alcohol to be in my future. I want my son to grow up with a mom who is present and not neglectful. I can’t be that person and keep alcohol, so I chose my son.

I’m an alcoholic who chose to go to rehab on my own and have been sober for 3 months today. I took responsibility, didn’t blame my husbands abuse for my drinking and decided I wanted to stop drinking for the rest of my life ON MY OWN. That’s what taking 100% accountability looks like in an addict. I changed my entire life and routine. I do what I have to do, have a sponsor and attend meetings. Good for you for seeing the writing on the wall and leaving for you. Addicts/alcoholics need very stric…

Oh my gosh!! This is the reason it’s taken me so long to decide that it’s the only option I can stomach. I’m a Christian and you’d think divorce was the ultimate sin. It’s so infuriating because my husband has spiritual abused me this whole marriage and that was one of the things we agreed to before marriage; no divorce. But of course he’s allowed to abuse me spiritually, sexually, emotionally and psychologically! That’s not condemned apparently. Even if it is, it doesn’t stop him.

You’re written everything I’ve felt for the last 4 years. It’s poetry from misery. I know it’s hard, but you deserve someone who doesn’t do drive by apologies. They suck and are insincere and unacceptable. Also, as a fellow writer, please consider becoming a writer. You have some untapped talent there. Use the time you spent slaving over trying to explain your pain to him on something worth your time. He’s probably not going to get it. ♥️

I’ve done this for 10 years. No more. Seriously don’t marry someone you think your can “help.” I lost myself completely and I’m just now finding myself. After a DECADE. Don’t let them waste your best years. (I’m almost 28 and saved everything for this man just to have him betray and lie over and over. So. F*king done).

As someone who is married to a porn addict, I can absolutely confirm that it is a hell of a lot better being single than being with one. It’s hell on earth honestly.

“As if a mans interest is somehow valuable.” That’s huge. I tell my friends “what is he doing to earn YOUR interest? If he’s treating you like AN option instead of THE option, then tell him Next, Please.” There are so many men in this world who were raised to treat women well, it’s a shame people waste there time with a man who doesn’t. Thank you, next.
