You can get a lawyer and use him/her for counsel but not for the actual divorce. An attorney will know your state's divorce laws and how best to leverage them. Unfortunately, kids make divorce drag on. Don't move out. She'll claim you're thw one who abandoned the marriage and your children.

Jumping in late here, but thank you for the post. My STBX and I have agreed to hire a mediator and no attorneys. We've already split most of the cash assets, and there are no kids. It's all a negotiation over alimony. This whole thing, for my STBX, is only about money and blame. 2 questions: Should I have an attorney in the background anyway? And do either of us have to sign anything that day? (Can we have a few days to reflect on the agreement?)

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
