Bingo. You've got the perfect mentality. I worked at a deli in high school and did the same thing as you. I can tell you that it never got me anywhere dating-wise, but any practice helps. And compliments are one of the best tools you can implement. I would say firstly that you need to understand the obligations of your employment at the restaurant and any rules they have for employee dating. A lot of people do not consider it but, for instance at Wal-Mart, it can be grounds for termination (and settles the issue for you pretty quickly).
