1) After their occupation the Japanese massacred between 25,000 and 50,000 ethnic Chinese in Singapore and Malaya. That would have included Lee Kuan Yew himself had one of the Japanese guards not allowed him to escape. 2) Singapore is much richer than South Korea. Give an east Asian population western institutions and they will always do well. Singapore is still exceptional even above this high standard. Hong Kong is the most direct comparison. Singapore started out significantly poorer and outperformed them. LKY also had the disadvantage of a 75% Chinese base vs Hong Kong's 90+%.

That was one of the most interesting posts at xenosystems last year. For all his genius, LKY failed to build a firm demographic foundation for his society. The man was so God damn good at his job though. Singapore will probably carry on just fine for a long while, simply on inertia.
