Perhaps not, but it is likely the parents' motivation is homophobic. They not only pursued legal action but also got her kicked out of school. The older girls parents make it sound like this is the motivation, "...They were out to destroy my daughter. [They] feel like my daughter 'made' their daughter gay." Source

People like me, excuse me you have no idea who I am and what I think. Talk like this is what gives this sub a bad reputation. I only wanted to point this out because the fact that these are two gay girls is highly relevant, seeing as its driving the parents to pursue such harsh action. In my opinion it shouldn't matter either way, they go to school together ffs. And YES I have seen a girl go through the same troubles, one of my closest female friends from high school was arrested her senior year…

They never say blatantly that she's gay/homosexual etc. so it does fly a little under the radar, but its right there in black and white; " "Smith said Kaitlyn became friends with an under-age female student at Sebastian River High School at the beginning of the school year. "They began a dating relationship," "

It's only a big deal because she is gay. This was posted a few days ago. Her and another girl (freshman in HS) had a relationship and the other girls parents were crazy and pissed that their perfect little girl was seeing another girl. So when the older girl turned 18 they filed suit, pushed to get her expelled etc. TLDR; this was so heavy handed because the girl is gay and the other girl's parents are crazy and pissed.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
