Amicable divorce, but my ex wants me to contribute to her “rent” for an apartment she owns. Am I being unreasonable?Does she offer to pay 1/2 your home? Did you split the assets equally? If no and yes, she’s capable of covering assuming she makes as much or more than you. She can cover her apartment. | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/08/25 05:46 PM
Sign agreement, or lawyer? Not an idiot… just trying to lower the cost getting through it. Unfortunately you don’t see yet the payment at the other end when compromising. You don’t need to be a jackass about, but - if you have a sister in your shoes - you wouldn’t hesitate to tell her to look for a fair split of it all. She’s not going to like any outcome, it’s natural, but figure out what a true “fair” is. If she’s angry by that she’ll simply be angry you weren’t taken advantage of. | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/06/25 03:01 AM
Sign agreement, or lawyer?Really freakin well said. I tell people you’re not separating for today, you’re agreeing on the separation you need years out. Just make it fair and equitable outcome | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/06/25 02:56 AM
Sign agreement, or lawyer?I’d ask if you sign it are you truly done, or are you setting the stage for a lifetime of compromise later. Personally, I’ve seen lots of people take a deal to “bring it to close”, but have yet to see that as the outcome. Look for a fair and equitable outcome and don’t waver. Also, make sure you hit the small details in mediation (pickup and drop off, exchanges, holidays, etc..). Might sound dumb but my guess is she’ll abuse these. Try using www.gaite.ai. It’s free right now and can help you thr… | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/06/25 02:52 AM
If you got Divorced today, what would you tell yourself?Get a solid separation agreement you and your STBX agree to, and remember it’s not an agreement for today. It’s an agreement you should both embrace for today, tomorrow, 12 months and many years out if you have kids, so look through that lens and get the right one in place. As for splitting money, material items, and many friendships, be ready to let it go fairly and embrace what’s next. It’s not with the fight for most of it. | /r/Divorce_Men | 04/06/25 02:43 AM
Enforcing BoundariesIt sounds like you’re handling well. Similar situation here and I had to final have a lawyer write a letter so she didn’t come in to make herself at home. It was at the point it was awkward for the kids. Boundaries are healthy for all involved. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 04:30 AM
Seriously? An email?I know that email stung, but try not to take it as cold. This is hard for her too, and maybe writing it out was the only way she could manage it right now for her and the kids. Everyone handles this stuff differently. If she’s still open to talking, save the phone for the more emotional or complicated things. Let her get what she needs, let it go, and focus on getting to a better place for you and the kids. Might not be what you want to hear, I get it, but having gone through it before it can be… | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 04:27 AM
I don't know how a divorce is possible.I really think you need to talk to her. Not to fix everything right now, but to understand where she really is, and to let her see where you are. Maybe it’s with a counselor, maybe just the two of you. But let that be the starting point. Just don’t let money be the reason you stay unhappy. It never is worth it. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 04:20 AM

First meeting with divorce lawyer, left me feeling deflated and unsupportedIt’s important to know what you’re lawyering up for when you go to find the right one. Fit is important. What are you preparing to fight for? Do you already have a separation agreement in place? Are you fighting for custody, child support, alimony, distribution of assets, some or all of the above? Different lawyers lock in sometimes on different areas. I had a great lawyer. Costly, but I wish I paid for her earlier in the process as it would have saved me a bunch. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 03:38 AM
update # 1: She's upset that I moved on so quickly - and she's the one who leftShe’s not upset you’ve moved on so quickly. She’s upset you’ve improved yourself by moving on! Keeping it going. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 03:30 AM
Does anyone feel like their attorneys are just one big money scam?I hope you’re early in the process. A good attorney to get you a solid separation agreement saves a ton later on. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 03:26 AM
Does anyone feel like their attorneys are just one big money scam?A good one is really worth it. A bad is like buying crappy boat. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 03:25 AM

Well… I’m fucked. Can’t say enough you’re not alone. Different states go about it differently, but although it sucks, a healthy place to get to is just recognizing you want your kids to be healthy and happy in both homes and the wealth you built the last several years was together, so she is entitled to 1/2. It’s tough to swallow at first, but once you get through accepting that you’ll be far better off. Let her leave, stay healthy, and if all you need to deal with is her equity in the home, you’ll be doing far b… | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/05/25 03:17 AM
