I actually just thought about this more. Desperately trying to improve to be "good enough" actually shows that you are very well good enough. This is because it shows: You are self aware- You can tell something is wrong and that it needs to be fixed You have a desire to self-improve- Why else would you work toward that false idealistic "good enough" if you didn't actually want to be a better person? The problem with trying to be "good enough" is that it dismisses these two qualities quite toxicl…

Thank you I really appreciate the compliment. It is very reassuring to have more outside evidence against my former "perfect or useless" mindset. Yeah therapy is rough because you have to be vulnerable despite every fiber of your being screaming that you shouldn't be. Well, effective therapy that is... I believe you can do it if you choose to do so though (if you haven't already of course). I mean you already took the first step by opening up about your relationship here so you are definitely aw…

No problem. Your post here actually struck a huge cord in me so there was no way I was not going to respond to it. I have gone through therapy and have been able to divorce my self-worth from the trauma I have witnessed and have been able to escape the trap of what I call "Relational Perfectionism (I have to be _, _, and __ while not being __ or __ otherwise people will always hate you/ find you annoying/ etc.) and I wanted to make damn sure that no one else fell into that mindset as it robbed m…

Yeah it is really sad that you poured your heart and soul into someone who essentially just didn't give a shit. Really deplorable of him to take advantage of you like that. I know this from my own trauma experiences so let me emphasize this: Do not let your self-worth hang on the words of this jerk. Emotional abusers use a cycle of belittlement to crush their victim's resolve and then "love bombing" to keep them coming back for more in the hope that if they just did this or just did that then th…

That is textbook gaslighting and is the hallmark of an abusive relationship. He used your love and desire to please him as an insidious way to circumvent and break down your boundaries with false guilt tripping. Truly reprehensible. Don't be embarassed, you appeared to have developed a trauma bond and his incessant need to strip you of your self-worth aside from pleasing him likely didn't help either. Take this as a learning experience to learn about the various manipulation tactics emotional ab…
