It's more than systemic. 30 years ago many women going for engineering were laughed at. Even when they get to the workforce. I know a woman who graduated Chem Eng top of her class in 2014 and she has faced a shit ton of casual and not so casual sexism in her career so far. The reason men do more important jobs is because of levels of sexism towards women. They weren't allowed to do most things. Still there's a bit of social stigma on women in say Engineering or being a pilot. They're still pushed toward more "feminine". This is shrinking alot of course as time goes on.
