Also it helps a lot with Switzerland's whole neutral position in wars, if 50% of the country is trained up for war it's a much worse idea to attack them than if their army is as small as it would be without Wehrpflicht. It also teaches a lot of people how to handle guns safely, which other countries tend to have issues with.
