2	Wikileaks The stated goals of the ELA common core are admirable: train students to analyze & evaluate a document using textual evidence. But they've basically run fiction out of the curriculum, which the research has firmly established is how you get young readers interested. The text they use is explicitly political in nature, in the high school years using excerpts of speeches by e.g. Kennedy/Reagan/ Clinton, and I disagree with the idea of labeling politicians' speeches as nonfiction.
