Well you must only be looking at a very narrow subset of forums then. The term was originally popularized in online gaming forums (which are essentially 99% male) in reference to "nerdy losers" who are stereotyped as having no friends, neglect their personal hygiene, and just sit in their parents' basement playing video games all day etc etc. Trust me, the term remains popular in these male gaming circles, as well as having now been hijacked for feminist use.

Came in here to say this. I actually see far more males than females calling other guys "neckbeards", though women (especially feminists) are certainly guilty of it as well. The problem is that while feminists advocate so fiercely for an end to harassment of women, those same feminists are first in line to harass men with terms like "neckbeard". Another example of why more feminism is not a solution to male problems.
