The advice I wish someone had given me: Have you considered getting your shit together?

Start a fitness routine and focus on it. Then crack some books.

Agree 100% on pop and country - so much sappy romance, and so much self-pity about failed romance. Not helpful. Hip hop does contain a lot of self-reliance - but also a lot of greed, obsession with the physical, and other worthless pursuits. Listening to Jay-Z go on about his expensive paintings is a great way to lose IQ points. Personally, I do a lot of instrumental music. John Coltrane, Booker T and the MGs, Cactus Channel, Spotify's lo-fi hip hop playlists are all great places to start. I fin…

Is there hope? Maybe - you can always shoot a friendly text and see if there's a response. Is there a point? Maybe, if you want to get ghosted again.

Confidence is sincere and unspoken. Over-confidence is aggressive, needy, and consumed with masking low self-worth.

Read and internalize the works of Epictetus - it's helped me a lot with this exact issue.

Read the works of the great Stoics - that which you cannot control (in this case, that which has already happened) is not worth worrying about.

I'd say Stoicism is essential for that, particularly the works of Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus.

As a younger man, I was all about them. As I've gained experience, though, I've found that there's usually an underlying reason for those who depend on drugs, alcohol, or other distractions - including the digital drugs of modern social media. And it usually ain't pretty.....

If you're pretty sure it's a bad idea.... it's usually a bad idea.

There's a lot of discussion of genes and animal stuff up front, and I can see what you mean. I'm now in the part about human behavior and it's really interesting.

What are you reading this week? I'm halfway through The Red Queen by Matt Ridley, it's about sex, evolutionary psychology/biology and human nature. A fascinating but very dense read. I also just started Seneca's Letters from a Stoic.

Forgive me for countering your question - but I use a pen and notebook, and I love it. Most guys I see in my gym who are serious about lifting do the same. It makes it easy for me to refer back to past workouts and track gains, and makes notes about goals and injuries.

I recently cut back to one beer per week (from getting blitzed 2-4 times per week) and although I'm still getting used to it, I've found it to be an excellent change. The financial and caloric differences are substantial, and the lack of hangovers in my life has been incredible. "I feel sorry for people who don't drink. Haha! I was just gonna call BS on that - that one on the left is an actual MySpace pic from 2004.

These may not apply, but made a difference for me: Try cutting down on your caffeine intake, that can lead to a serious crash in the late afternoon hours. Cut out any sugary drinks or foods, as that can make a difference as well.

Some good wisdom here, sir. Your point 1 - don't get married early - is KEY. Ask any 30yo if they are anything like themselves at 20. Occasionally it works out, but everyone I know that got married in their early 20's was divorced by their early 30's. Your point 5 is gold as well. Spending time with your kids is the least expensive thing you can do, and makes the greatest impact on the quality of the kids' lives and will shape them into quality adults. Simply playing games with them, talking wit…

That low of an N-count is unrealistic (as many other comments have pointed out). In some cases, it can also be a red flag as to childhood sexual abuse or assault, which is a whole 'nother can of issues you won't want to open.

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” ― Marcus Aurelius In this case: First and foremost, figure out why you're so affected by the actions of someone else, as this is a red flag on you. If your emotions are in the hands of someone besides yourself, you are in trouble. Correct this. Secondly, huge red flag on her. This isn't a one time thing, it's a pattern of empty pr…

This is great advice. I like the idea of enumerating one's distractions, and creating a strategy for each one in order to minimize it. Fantastic approach.

Thank you for posting this excellent article with great advice. I would add that referring back to the works of the great Stoic thinkers is also a good maintenance exercise.
