I agree that it's rather about skillfully navigating with the least effort possible than succumbing. Succumbing sounds more like giving up / giving in. However, I think what Lao Tzu teaches us is that many times we fight it's actually wiser to yield. Understanding how the river flows gives us the power of knowing when to act and when not to. Interesting point and food for thought!

Chapter 67 of the TTC sheds some light on how to fight. From what I have learned, a Taoist is expected to fight skillfully but without anger. Going with the flow and dodging rocks with an ongoing inner smile. So yeah, of course you should fight and defend yourself. But this can still be done with a sense of elegance. If you are interested, search for Wu-Wei.
