If he tells you his ex was crazy within the first few dates or is really dismissive and aggressive when talking about his "abusive" or "crazy" ex then I would take his word with a grain of salt. If he waits to tell you and discloses it in a vulnerable, respectful, and appropriate way then I am more willing to accept it as the truth. Always vet after though.
