The three most important things to take away from this experience are: 1 - Some people are offended by absolutely nothing. 2 - some of the people from rule 1 are willing to make a big fiasco over nothing. 3 - If rules 1 and 2 apply, and you didn't actually do anything, you need to go through HR or applicable 'corporate' management.

So, you learned a good lesson. Now you know that any interaction involving flirtatious comments, or compliments, can be taken as sexual harassment. It will never matter what the context was, or if it was obviously a simple compliment... My cousin was fired for sexual harassment once. He was working in an unused section of a commercial building, some lady randomly came down the hall, he turned around to look at her briefly, got called into the office the next morning.
