I'm aware. My dad's an MD, and I'm a PhD in 'biochemistry', lets say. I have a lifetime of MD vs. PhD insults ready to go.

So, academia is weird in this way, and the Dr. title is used a lot more as a way to differentiate between professionals and students. In any industry it's rarely used. My dad is an MD, and while I don't feel like an imposter being referred to as Dr., as you said, I earned it, it was a lot of work, more than med school, which is basically just a trade school, I do think PhDs should kind of think about where and when they are using their Dr. title, and I guess it kinda sucks, but I think the reaso…

But that could also because I'm a PhD It's really weird to want to be called Dr. because of a PhD in my experience.

I find women with PhDs are the worst at this (They like being called Dr.). But that could also because I'm a PhD that interacts with a lot of other PhDs, so my sample is skewed towards women that have spent their lives in the bubble that is academia, where, things like this are real issues that need to be solved and it's effecting the world.

That's weird, I never assumed that, my mom took my dad's last name and maybe that's why I was aware? I also grew up with a lot of women that kept their last name professionally, so there was a reason for it. That being said, I get super frustrated when women who don't take their husbands last name freak out if they get called Mrs. Husband for whatever reason. Like, bitch, I'm a dude and my (ex) girlfriend would make all the hotel reservations, I went by Mr. X more times than I can count and I wa…

Exactly. It's kind of sad because your mom probably could have gone a lot further in her field had she had those 18 extra years of experience. At least she went back though. My mom gave up law school for my dad and never went back, though, to be fair I think she made the right decision with focusing on helping my dad's business.

It tends to be very precious years in terms of career advancement in certain industries. In medicine what can happen is women will graduate med school, finish residency, but then they are 28-33 in their first years of actually working, and if they want to have kids they need to take some of that time off. Medicine is also extremely demanding time wise, so it's hard to balance a family with career. I've noticed the same in academia, which can be worst because you are expected to do post docs thro…

It's called a qualitative calculation. Statistically women make less than men for a multitude of reasons, but it's rarely the case that the same exact position would pay a man more than a woman, tit for tat. A big issue is that a lot of women decide/have to take time off for children which makes them less dependable and valuable to the workforce at large. When women complain about certain industries not being supportive of mothers they aren't joking. Academia and medicine are notoriously tough o…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
