The boyfriend argument shouldn't immediately turn you off IMO. No, it's all about a level playing field. If you give her money or a ticket before you are seriously deep into a relationship you are too 'needy' and give off the vibe that you value her more that you value yourself. After all, you gave up part of your life to earn that money.

In my experience fat girls or even uglier girls for that matter are much harder to get than pretty girls. Many men think they are easier and thus they get approached more. Pretty girls on the other hand are much less approached because men think they are 'out of their league' and wont even try. Combine that with low self esteem from fat or ugly girls and you have a much harder time approaching them.

In my experience : If you're not a totally ugly dude but just average , woman don't really care about looks that much. Its how you make them feel that is much more important so i think this article is somewhat true. If you're totally ugly, dirty or just not her type , looks do matter but not as much as the other way around. How a woman looks is much more important for men.
