I actually disagree about not doing this early on. Maybe not a first "date" but On a first meeting this can work. A move I've been pulling at bars recently is to start talking to a girl and after a second take her drink chug the whole thing look at her smirk and say "you look like you could use a drink". Its been working very well for me so far.
