Yes, it is about mindset. A mindset created by certain genetic components and environmental components which you have no control over. SAD is a psychological disorder, so of course it ought to be about mindset.

That is what disorders mean. And yes, that is why you need help in the situation in which you can't help yourself. If that was not the situation, that would not be a disorder. And yes, the first step is to change that mindset, which is the reason that therapists exist. I am not talking out of my experience, I am stating what psychology says about it. And motivational quotes do not hold any value against science.

In the case of disorders, yes, you can not help yourself (mostly). Disorders come to existence as a result of environment (which you can't control) and genetics (which you can't control). Whether it be schizophrenia, or social anxiety disorder, in most cases you can not create a dramatic change by yourself. Because you can not change your neural netweork by thinking. Age has a lot to do with it. Your brain literally changes with age. One important change is that your frontal lobe, which is basically known for more rational decisions, is only fully developed at around young adulthood, ~20 years of age. There are a lot of other direct and indirect results of age, but I do not feel like writing a whole chapter of my child development textbook. I am sure you can find with a little research.
