Gotcha, yeah - my dynamic is a bit different, but I get why you did what you did. For me, the support is going to be about 7 years. But she has the potential to substantially grow her earning power over that period. (She got into law). It'll mean annual (or more often) reviews of the support - but, that's ok. She also wants to get out from under being supported my me. It's always been a huge area of friction that she was reliant on me. Moving out, for me, is driven by it being economically viabl…

We have a similar plan. the mortgage is low for my area, less than $1,7k the house needs work, but it's probably $500k in it's present state, and could be worth nearly $700k. I'm of the same mind that I'd give her the equity - but it's #1) not enough to cover the full amount of spousal support, and #2) she's starting a new career and wants/needs some support for a period of time. So, I would trade the equity for more of my 401. Which, frankly, earns more than than the real estate would appreciat…

You're right - there is no guarantee. we've split once before, and that's how we did it. And, I suppose if she did pull that shit I have ammo about prior bad parenting decisions (physco ex bf and an RO). I can point to. I just don't believe she'd do it.

Thanks for the insight - we're both on the mortgage, and I am totally ok with walking away. In fact, I'm fine giving up my equity in the house for more of my 401...or something like that. She and I have discussed ideas in/around how to equitably balance giving her the equity.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
