Yes, bad publicity is good but if there is insufficient reaction to it does it matter much? I haven't read Gillette's financials and wouldn't know how to guess as to whether the protest had any meaningful effect. I guess I will just wait to see if they insult men again and take it from there.

It is a lot easier to get away with insulting men than it is with women. If women boycotted a company that primarily sold men's products they would tell their insignificant others not to buy their products. I'm sure the feminist agitators would be selective as to they target for reasons that you have given. I can think of one way this would be a good thing. If women boycotted firms that did not have a female board member it would make financial sense to hire them. Of course if the white population boycotted any firm that had a black board member (after they made this legal) it would also make sense not to hire black board members.
