Humans are profoundly selfish animals. How something affects someone personally will always be much more important to them than how it affects strangers. I would argue that someone who didn't operate this way would be mentally ill.

While you may be talking about black men in the media, someone reading your statement would feel like they are being grouped in with the idiots you're discussing. Nobody likes feeling as if they're judged for the actions of strangers.
