I think it definitely brought attention to the harm of circumcision. But many Americans probably won't say "circumcision is bad because the babies got herpes." They'll say "That weird ritual of sucking the baby's bleeding penis gave the baby herpes. We don't do that, it's just a crazy ultra-orthadox jew thing." But I really hope it makes people think of what is actually being done to male infants on a regular basis.

Firstly, where are you getting your data? I don't have any statistics on hand, but in my personal experience, that is not the case. Also, some women who have suffered FGM in regions where it is prevalent claim that they're sex life is just fine, and that it doesn't make a difference. (I don't believe that's true. I stand corrected, that's good to know. I think they are deliberate lies in many cases. Then I think that some doctors are just ignorant. Apparently in many popular medical texts in the US, diagrams show the penis without a foreskin. No wonder they don't know anything about an intact penis. I was born in Canada, but apparently my doctor didn't know a thing about foreskin either (or he/she did, but didn't care).

Yeah I agree that if all other options have been exhausted, and the only remaining option is circumcision, then it's ok. The problem is that many doctors (esp. in USA), just jump straight to circumcision. They don't even consider far less invasive measures. And like I said, often they diagnose boys as having phimosis when really they just haven't finished developing yet. You are only partially correct. Yes in terms of anatomy the glans of the penis and the clitoris are equivalent. However, if you're talking about where people get the majority of their sexual pleasure, you are incorrect. The male foreskin contains the primary erogenous tissue, and contains specialized nerves that are not present anywhere else on the penis. I'm also circumcised, and I'm mad at both. Where/when I was born it was not standard practice, so neither my parents nor the doctors had any valid excuse. I agree that circumcision should be available when there is actual medical need, but phimosis is not a good reason. Firstly, phimosis is often wrongly diagnosed. As usual, I completely agree. There was that case recently where people were outraged that parents gave their toddler a tattoo. Personally I would much rather have been tattooed at birth than circumcised. Both would have changed my appearance, but only one has robbed me of my bodily integrity and normal sexual activity and pleasure. I suspect this is the reason why I was circumcised as well, but I have not asked. But as you say, it's one of the worst "reasons" I've ever heard. If a father is missing a finger or toe, would they cut off the corresponding finger or toe on the infant? After all, a son needs to look like his father.
