I went out of my way to have my mom teach me the basics before I left for college, and have built off that since then. Cooking is easy, it's mostly prep work, and learning to gauge when something is cooked enough. With the internet, there's no excuse, there are Youtube videos that will teach you to prepare anything. I started with a copy of The Joy Of Cooking my mom got me, to buying specialty recipe books, to watching Youtube.
