I think you misunderstood the movie. Zoey's character dumps him because he was a hopeless romantic and was a looking for a manic pixie dream girl. Joseph Gordon Levitt was living in a fantasy world and refused to acknowledge the fact that Zoey wasn't interested. The movie was telling men to stop chasing a manic pixie dream girls, because they don't exist. Joseph's character was the villain.
