3	How do you guys keep yourself safe from STI’s? Yes actually MOST people who have HSV are asymptomatic. Or for HSV1, they may have had a cold sore when they were a kid and never got one again. Well, they still have HSV1 and can still give it to you if they give you oral sex. It stays in your body and can transmit even when symptoms aren’t present through a process called “viral shedding”. 3	How do you guys keep yourself safe from STI’s? OP- the only way to avoid herpes is to ask partners to get an HSV antibody test before contact. HSV is not included in standard STD panels and most people who carry it are asymptomatic, so they don’t know they have it. About 2/3 of adults carry HSV1, which can transmit to your genitals if they give you oral sex. 1/5 of women carry HSV2. 3	properly disclosing STD status Actually, OP is right. Genital HSV1 is significantly less contagious than oral HSV1. The virus only sheds 3-5% of the time. There are actually no recorded cases of genital to genital HSV1 transmission. In the US, 68% of adults have HSV1, and 26% of females have HSV2. I think the official stat for HSV2 is 1/6 people, but it’s more common in women than men. It’s really not a big deal if you take precautions.
