If you demonstrate your value to the company and the higher ups notice it, whatever you say to them outside of "I want a raise" when you approach for more money is essentially irrelevant. By letting them know you want more money you are inadvertently implying you may seek employment elsewhere and that your time is valuable, as that is ultimately what they're paying you for. I've recently entertained this idea, considering I'm away from home for Christmas holiday like any other year, and this is a great time for self reflection.
