"Love" today is depicted as an OTT fantasy drama. Look at all the (so called) "reality dating" shows...The Bachelor, Love Island, and it's ilk, which are extremely popular, especially amongst women. Is THAT love? Then you have "love" used as a marketing tool, jewelery companies trying to push "love" as buying HER expensive rings and whatnot. Selling Hallmark "valentine" cards. Is THIS love?

You were lucky to have solid models early on. I was (during my teens and 20s especially) bombarded with the whole (in patronizing tone) "aww looks don't matter, just keep trying, there's someone for everyone" especially if I got turned down lol. Let me tell you, of over 35 years of experience (since my mid teens), LOOKS have always come first. For years and years, (and more years) I did not have this mindset; I went out with determination.
