2	Why do western men marry? Yikes. That wouldn't happen in the US. She may have been able to recover something if she overpaid the mortgage or made improvements to the home that increased its value. I am licensed in the U.S. and described the general rule in the U.S (as the person I was replying to specified "in certain states") and I specifically said "generally requires." Common-law marriage generally requires the parties to (1) agree privately to be husband and wife and (2) hold themselves out to the public as husband and wife. I recently took some young associates to a networking event so they could get face time with our clients and hopefully bring in new clients. One associate is a young woman. At the event, an older, married man asked her to sit on his lap. At the event, she passed her business card out to four people. Three of the four called to ask her on a date.
