It gets better. Join us on this side. It’s good you’re getting it out. Also write it out, take the effort to put literal pen to paper. It helps so much. We’ve been there. Take all the advice here. Just drive. Just walk. Yell at nothing. Just get it out. Therapy if you’re open to it. Know that there’ll be good days and bad days. But I’ll bet mostly good from here on out. Keep yourself disciplined and don’t do anything stupid. Once you’re clear, the divorce is finalized, it’s such a weight lifted.…

My ex went into debt 4 years before we got divorced. $25k of credit card debt. We never fully merged accounts, so we each had individual checking, savings, and credit cards. I was floored by it when she brought it up, when we started divorce proceedings. My two big takeaways: 1. It made it so much easier to be ok with the divorce. This person held a giant secret for 4 years. What other secrets was she capable of? What other secrets were still out there? No thank you, I can’t wait to be out of th…

Echoing what others have said and adding my own: - focus on you. What do you need? - therapy is wonderful. Someone with no bias who can help you process your thoughts, sometimes by just being there for you to dump what’s on your mind. I started going a year ago when my divorce started, and I still go. - find your support. People will be there, it’s amazing how they’ll be there for you if you tell them what’s happening. - you’re having normal thoughts - insecurity because you’re worried she’ll mo…

I am a year after divorce now and was in a similar position last year - 14 years married, 2 kids, ex was focused on career and our kids - that’s what made her happy. I didn’t. Not sure how old your kids are, but we told our kids right after thanksgiving so they had time to process before Christmas. I moved out a few weeks after Christmas. It worked well to do that in our situation. Having said all that for context - decide what you want to do FOR YOU. It was hard for me to think that way at firs…

Doing the exact same thing. I’ve recouped so much free time because I’m not putting energy into her, so much effort went in with no return for many years. It was a slow decline and I didn’t notice it…I’m so much happier now. Hoping other men struggling can read your post as well as my response and all the others because it SUCKS when you’re in the thick of separation, but there’s a wonderful light at the other end - it’s all about realizing it

Good luck buddy - hopefully she doesn’t get a lawyer because they will try to max out what she is legally owed even if it’s not what you two worked out. Didn’t happen to me, thankfully, but my girlfriend is going through that right now; her assface spineless ex agreed to a fair amicable split but then hired a lawyer and it’s been litigious since then, with his lawyer trying to get everything possible (making him feel like the victim). In short, good luck and I hope the amicability remains! Get t…

The initial phase is unbearable. You can accelerate through this time by finding your support network. Reach out. Family. Friends. Old friends you haven’t talked to in a long time. And therapy - very crucial move there. My split was not the same as yours but I was FLOORED by the support out there if you just reach out for it. Be vulnerable. People will listen. For the small minority that don’t, move on. I was shocked at how many people had something similar in their life. You’re not alone, and c…

It was the beginning of the end for us. We both have stable good jobs and were fortunate to be able to work remote. I enjoyed the side effect of shutdowns and cancellations that made life simpler…fewer commitments, neighbors around that we created a bubble with…felt like we made real connections. Kids played together, cookouts, evening fire pits, outdoor movies. Anyway I enjoyed this, and when life restarted again with 7,000 kids activities, pool memberships, trips to see in-laws, experiences th…

I’m only a few months into my new single life but here’s my positives. I’m 41 with two kids, 9 & 6: I set my own expectations with no regard for how she feels. I was married to an exhausting perfectionist who claimed to be simple (as long as I knew exactly what those simple pleasures were without her explicitly telling me what she wanted or needed). It’s so freeing to not have to worry about disappointing her anymore I’m more interesting. I talk more to new and old friends. Not having a safety n…

I can add some context, I’m trending about 2x what the metrics say for my retirement account balance, and my employer has a very strong match. My thought is I’d try to get the max amount out of the house in liquid cash before capital gains taxes kick in and make up the rest in retirement, if the equity in the house I’d get is greater than $250k (we bought in 2010 and the house has appreciated greatly since then)

I’m in a situation where I will get bought out of the house. She can have it - it needs a roof soon, our diy projects we did together are both a painful reminder of what once was and starting to show their amateur level of quality. I could make quite the list…but the house is a time bomb. It was a money pit to begin with. Having said all that - I assume u/ZigMasterFlash is now renting? That costs money too, and returns nothing. Rent can increase. Mortgages (unless you do an ARM) don’t. Taxes and…
