I mean, seriously. Military wives gaining weight when they are alone on a base with friends they have to make (not necessarily the sort of friends they would make on their own) because they are all they have now is not in any way surprising.

That person can be a part of the feminist equation if these roles were decided on in equal measure by both spouses. The whole point of actual feminism is that a woman can fill any role she wants and so can a man and as long as they are equal partners in the decisions of those roles then it's fine. It is not fine when a woman neglects her role of choice and expects him to pick up the slack and it is not fine when a man expects his spouses to fill the homemakers subservient role without any real d…

I don't understand why you're upset. I never defended those reasons, I just said they were typical reasons. And what am I projecting onto whom? I was just verifying that his girlfriends reasons were, in fact, typical reasons, and to the op before him that it didn't have anything to do with them treating approaching a raise like they approach the dating life. Edit: what seems to be what is possibly a twisted understanding of how women approach dating life.

Yes, absolutely. I was simply commenting directly on the idea that women do not take certain jobs by choice when that was an oversimplification of a problem with a lot of different compartments. :)

I bring this up every time this debate hits the table because even though it's anecdotal, it is representative of a larger experience of most women in my field that I have spoken to. It's unwise to ignore societal influence on choice. If I had decided at 16-19 that I wanted to fix cars for a living the backlash I hit with my family and some of my friends would have absolutely detracted me from doing it. Assuming I did say "fuck all of you, I do what I want" and went to tech school anyway, I woul…

All of those reasons are typical reasons why women normally do not ever ask for raises. I've never asked for a raise in my life and it sure as shit isn't because I'm waiting in my bosses office with my tits out for him to say "great knockers, here is $5 more an hour!"

We got Lyft in our city before Uber ((or they marketed really well just as ride share started catching on)) so locals are pretty loyal to lyft. Tourists tend to use uber cause they already had the app, but if they asked a local how to get around they would be more likely to recommend Lyft. I never use Uber for ride share, only lyft. But we use uber eats all the time.

Hey I haven't even had it a quarter as bad as some others. I haven't seen my father since I was 6 or 7 and my mom was seeing my dad (step dad but he has always been my dad. Any schmuck can be a biological father, bit it takes commitment and live to be a dad) when I was about 4 and they married several years later in 97. Still going strong and I've never seen two goofballs more in love. My mom got the love and companionship she deserved and I got a great dad and new siblings out of it, so we are …

Yeah my mom was like that with religion. We weren't regular churchgoers. She raised me with a very loose acceptance of a god and higher power and never stopped me from exploring different churches (something I only did with friends or boyfriends who wanted me to attend with them) and doesn't get onto me now about the fact that I never go to church even though she has gotten back into regular attendance. My mom did a lot of things right when it comes to my ability to think critically. I owe it al…

No nothing like that. He is just a tool. The one night he did try to forcibly and drunkenly take me from her by cornering her in a parking lot she hopped the median and sped off to my grandparents house. I think I saw him once at Christmas after that with his family and then never again that I can recall. My mom is pretty bad ass. He was stalking our apartment out on weekends so we were with my grandparents every weekend, either the ones nearby or the ones further away and when she couldn't go b…

The best thing my mom ever did for me was NEVER saying ANYTHING bad about my father and letting his actions speak for themselves. She would even get onto my aunts (his sisters) when they would start talking about him negatively in front of me. She would say "you can say those things as often as you want, as long as TooFakeToFunction isn't in your house." And it worked. I think he is a giant fuck, and I came to that conclusion on my own based on his terrible actions and scarring memories he has b…

Perhaps my grand mistake was airing a general frustration of this thread through your reply and for that I apologize. I am not op. Yes both genders have reason to feel unsafe and I have never once denied that or made excuses for it. I'm frustrated by the general theme in this thread that homeless women are livin' easy at the expense of men when it's not true. They face their own challenges that make living on the streets unsafe. Both genders no doubt face assault both sexual and physical and eac…

Where did I ever say it was the number one thing (besides your argument of "who wants a bag lady as a sex slave" is ridiculous. Insinuating that every homeless woman looks like a "bag lady) homeless women have to worry about? I didn't. I used a singular example of something homeless women face in a thread full of people acting like they have nothing to worry about at all and have it easy. There are all sorts of issues that uniquely or disproportionately affect women just like a number of things …

What does the comparative to the west and other places in the world have anything to do that homeless women in this country are more vulnerable to sex trafficking and that is a reason they feel unsafe on the street? My point is you can care about the issues both genders face. And my point in bringing up women's vulnerability is because I am seeing people all over this thread practically argue that homeless women are living the dream while men are left in the gutter to rot and it simply isn't tru…

But in a statistic of men and women there are only two options. It's not like a racial statistic where inclusion of several races and exclusion of others could reasonable be seen as leaving them out because men aren't left out in this statistic. If 23% are women, then 77% are men. Why must it be spelled out beyond that?

I love how most people in this thread are conveniently forgetting that most victims of human trafficking are women and what better place to get them than on the streets where they have nowhere else to go. Acknowledging real issues women face doesn't mean you're ignoring the ones men face and vice versa. You can care about the danger of sexual assault for women sleeping on the street AND physical assault men face (and sexual and physical for both as well) without starting a pissing match on who h…

Free? No. There are small scholarships available for some trades to women who meet benchmarks and apply for them. But we aren't swimming in female only scholarships. It helps to get women interested and make them feel supported by in an industry it's easy to feel outnumbered in, but I had better luck just finding general scholarships than I did female-only. If I searched that term specifically I may be able to find them but I think most are distributed exclusively by the Women's Industry Network…

The two arent mutually exclusive? I can be bothered by men being under-represented in elementary education and that people seem to not accept that a man can enjoy being around kids without being a creep...And I am neither a man nor a teacher. The fact that she is a woman that chose not to do a STEM field job doesnt mean she can't have valid insight through research and conversation of the sorts of things women face on those fields and their reasons for leaving it.

I am a woman. I went to a tech school to learn how to fix wrecked cars. Most of the guys there had a basic understanding of vehicular repair either because their dads/older brothers/friends helped them and guided them and taught them where as my dad has been "meaning to show me how to change a tire" for over a decade now. Everything I learned about cars I learned from school at the age of 25. I was at a very clear disadvantage over my classmates because of the way I was brought up and the things…

The issue I run into when explaining sexism in my field (male dominated trade) is that I get people calling my experiences "anecdotal evidence" (which that isn't intently wrong) and using that as an excuse to discount it entirely like it's not representative of issues women typically face in this field. But it is. All of it.

Most people are conditioned not to want trade jobs. That's why there is a shortage of trade workers. There a few organizations (mostly smaller local ones that operate with or under WIN) devoted to women in the trades but it makes sense they aren't often heard of because not many people are looking for those jobs in general... It makes sense that the main focus would be on disparity in fields that are actually sought after..
