I’ll admit the article isn’t very concise, but at some point it says that the southern democrats began referring to themselves as republicans during the civil rights movements as the modern democrats and republicans began voting for what they do now. I see what you're saying, and to be fair I only know what my friends have told me about their relationships (which from what I hear it's good and we're pretty honest with each other), but within my own life my girlfriend and I have generally been pretty good with each other.
