Exactly a great point! I once took it upon myself to try to take some of the actuarial certification exams and in studying for these exams I would find lots of discussions on the philosophy of insurance. A point that was frequently made was that the purpose of risk adjusted pricing was to discourage risky behaviours. This was supposed to be the moral benefit of insurance companies in that they could reduce the overall incidence of bad things happening by discouraging unnecessarily risky habits. …
