Are you forgetting a step dad LIVES with the child? My step dad who ALSO worked hard but lived in my house, not 40 minutes away without traffic, was able to attend all these events because he was able to. He taught me how to ride a bike because I wanted to learn on a Tuesday, not on a court appointed custody weekend. He was present every single day. Meals, life lessons, grocery shopping, actual day-to-day parental energy. I don’t understand how you place this level of parenting at an uncle level…

Because my step dad was an amazing father figure, that’s why. He was at every sports game, band concert, awards assembly. Every down-to-earth lecture, my first concert, driving lessons, etc. Unfortunately my real father worked a lot and wasn’t able to attend these events; I’m really thankful my step-dad was. Man, what an ego. Give your head a shake. A wedding day isn’t about the dad or step dad; it’s about the bride surrounding herself with the strong men who have loved and supported her. If a girl grows up with a bio dad who she saw every weekend or two, you think that dismisses every weekday the step-dad showed up for her?
