2	statistics: maternal mortality, workplace hazards, and parricide Just from a statistical standpoint, this is incredibly sloppy. You don't need the number of deaths per year, you need the number of deaths per person-year. There are a lot more people working than there are being pregnant. If only one person dies per year while blowtorch-parachuting, that doesn't make blowtorch-parachuting safer than driving.
