I have a STEM degree - still remember being bombarded with how we need more women in STEM... Why? Everyone is allowed to apply we should take the best candidates regardless of gender/race/any other irrelevant feat (regarding STEM) of the applicant. One professor even suggested women should be salaried students to encourage them. Also: noone ever suggested STEM studies for me neither or is it a calling for me - I made rational decision post HS based on my own research of programs.

While I do agree with your point, we have pretty extensive testing besides to be eligible as a student and the school lasts for 3,5 years. No way I'm implicating physical attributes should be the only factor (and afaik they give the least points of all categories), but the bar should be set to the same level for everyone regardless of gender.

In Finland we have (last time I checked) 2 female firefighters. Its because the physical requirements are the same and someone born as a male has an advantage, its biology. For the police academy on the other hand, all the requirements are lower for women. I find that weird. Never seen a patrol with all women tho.
