If she had a garden and livestock (even if it was only chickens), then I'd say your grandma was a farmer as well as a homemaker. My grandparents had a small farm too. Also... self-defense is not always about evading an attack. This is where folks in the UK really get it wrong. Sometimes evading is not the best option. Often evasion is not a viable option at all. Defending yourself means having the means to effectively stop an attack when avoiding / evading is not possible without incurring grievous bodily harm. A gun is the best tool for this job. Affirming the fundamental human right to self-defense has nothing at all to do with revenge.

I would venture to guess there are a number of foreigners who are gaming the system. In the US, we have a problem with centrla / South Americans( Puerto Ricans in particular) flying their sick relatives into NYC and dropping them off at the ER with a list of things to say in order to ensure they get treated. I don't trust this study. It's very easy to manipulate the results by having one type of felony conviction for black participants and another for white participants. A felony drug conviction is more readily overlooked than something like armed robbery. This article does not cite whether the type of felony is the same in each case. There could be other factors influencing the outcome that could be easily ignored by an unscrupulous academic professional with an agenda.
