I agree with your comment and just want to add an observation. (and, of course, because they want to have sex with them) I think this point is massively overstated when discussing men's attitudes towards women. Yes, it's a factor. However, I believe the far more salient factor is men's predisposition for romantic projection. Even platonically, men are prone to project positive characteristics onto women. The pertinent issue isn't chivalry, but rather things like the gamma bias which engenders benevolence towards women in every aspect of life, as well as the fact that men are net tax payers and subsidize women's lives as breadwinners

Women want the men they are attracted to to be masculine while being in tune with her emotional needs (i.e. being a bit nicer than they are) and they want the rest to be docile and passive so they don't bother them. Once you view the discourse on "toxic masculinity" through this lens, it makes a lot more sense.
