So, do you mean that when you fall for a guy, you go into kind of a passive reverie and stop being the lively, sparkly woman that attracted him in the first place? Used to happen to me also, although in my case, it was happening with aloof men who didn't really want a relationship. I just kept looking for a peg to hang my fantasy on, but you know, most guys don't really appreciate being treated that way. I couldn't settle down until I let go of looking for that fantasy. Reading Carl Jung helped …

Yes, exactly. I used to get so upset when my husband messed up the babies' nap schedule, after I'd carefully planned it out! He really, really did not understand. I guess this is another reason why it's important to have same-sex friends.

I like this a lot. Thanks. I think the flipside of it is also true- as women, we sometimes see our husbands thinking in a big-picture way and we mistake it for being egotistical. Anyway I know I've done that, especially when our kids were smaller. I got my feelings hurt when he didnt pay attention to the details of domestic life. I suppose we have the ability to see the worst in each other, but also to see the best.

Like some others have said, it seems to me like you are asking for too much. You cannot have: --The husband you chose, who presumably works pretty short hours, is involved at home, and values your future role as a SAHM --A big income like your friends who are doctors and lawyers --A stress-free life in which everything goes according to plan ---two or three kids while you're still young I am guessing that your wealthy friends have stressors in their lives that you don't have. Their husbands are …

I'm not sure what you mean by mate guarding. Obviously, no man wants an insecure or controlling wife. So in that sense, mate guarding would be a no no. On the other hand I think some men do appreciate a little light-hearted posessiveness. If I'm at an event with my husband and he's talking to a pretty woman, I will probably cross the room and join their conversation for a moment. That kind of thing.

I love the way Dontrememberme put this. I'm not diagnosed but I suspect that I am on the spectrum. Motherhood, for me, has been all about close connections and sharing my self with my kids. I think you do need other people around to help teach your kids social norms. For me, that's been family and a few close friends, making sure the kids have those normal experiences that I might forget about. I think I'm great at giving the kids a safe world where they can be themselves, but I need help teachi…

What would you be hoping to gain from this? What do you mean when you talk about embracing being a housewife in a public way? Being a housewife is not exactly a public act, so I don't think there's a need for embracing it in a public way. On the other hand, I do think it can be a lonely life and it's easy to fall into self-doubt and insecurity. I dont mean that as a criticism. I am a SAHM and homeschool my kids, so I understand the ups and downs of being at home. I suggest looking for female fri…

I know that everyone is saying that this is fine and yes, sure, it is. There are plenty of happy couples who sleep in separate beds. At the same time, it is also ok to be bothered by this! Personally, I would be upset if my husband wanted to sleep in a separate bed -- I really love snuggling next to him while I fall asleep, and I love having him next to me when I wake up. There is nothing wrong with sleeping separately. But you also have to take your own preferences into account.

I guess I'm a little confused about what you want here. Is the stocking in addition to your other presents? In my family, stockings are something only kids get, so I'm not sure whether you mean just gifts in general, or you also want a stocking full of gifts. You seem like you really want Christmas to be pretty elaborate, which I understand! However, it also seems like your expectations are very unmatched and this will likely be a much bigger problem if you end up having kids together. This is s…

Is there any way the kids can present it as "we want you to know that we're doing well for ourselves financially?" ie doing well enough to buy a nice gift. My father was always overprotective of me but I do remember how proud he was when I first took him out for a meal. It allowed him to relax a little -- it meant I was a capable adult.

No. I do a lot but I'd go nuts trying to do it all. I work part time, from home, and I homeschool our 2 kids. I cook lunches and dinners, do daytime dishes, tidying, most of the other day to day stuff. I also vacuum, clean the bathroom, dust, clean the floors, change sheets. My husband makes breakfast every day and lunch on weekends. He takes care of the laundry and washes the dinner dishes. He is generally more in charge of the kids on the weekend, leaving me relatively free, although mostly I …

That's a pretty big issue. In your place, I'd hang back for a good while before making any major decisions. He's only known about this child for 4 months, right? Which means that right now he is probably on his best behavior? I'd wait to see how things look in another six months.

There was a time in my life when this was happening to me. Looking back, I dont think I was really ready for a relationship, and I was probably sending out weird signals!

I agree that it's preference. Personally, I did want to be courted. I loved that my husband came up with great dates and paid for them. Mind you, neither one of us had any money, so our dates were very, very cheap. Walks, free concerts, cheap meals, dive bars. I also made sure to contribute whenever I could. Sometimes I grabbed the check, or I brought food if we were taking a walk, etc etc. But I'll be honest, I would've felt funny if he hadn't offered to pay for things. Not because I was trying…

The not replying would drive me crazy too. But probably he is just feeling guilty about taking time off from work and doesnt want to think about it too much. Do you absolutely need him to pick you up? If you don't, maybe you can send him a text explaining that you'd love to see him but that you can also manage on your own and that you're planning to leave at x time. That's what I would do, just because it would drive me bonkers not knowing when to get ready otherwise.

Did he make that comment once, or is it something he says regularly? On its own, that comment doesnt sound bad at all. It honestly sounds like the kind of thing a guy would say if he were trying to sound mature and not bitter, if you know what I mean :) like I once asked my husband why he broke up with his high school girlfriend and he said "you know, we were kids and I was too immature to handle a relationship." I see that as a nice, self-deprecating view. Way better than those guys who think t…

It just sounds like group 3 might slide into marriage without giving it a lot of thought. I also dont know what they mean by controlling for marriage. How precise are the controls? Do they distinguish between, say, someone who goes to church but is generally part of mainstream culture, and someone who believes in abstinence until marriage?

But that doesnt mean that they got divorced because they move in together. It sounds more like they got divorced because they slid into marriage carelessly. It could also be that people who don't live together before marriage are religious and therefore really dont believe in divorce. This could be skewing the figures too.

I think a lot of the posts here are very idealistic about how things should be. That's not to say wrong, but it's not allowing a lot of room for human frality. Yes, men do sometimes get irrationally hurt when their relationship changes post-baby. Plenty of them struggle to adjust. Of course they should have the maturity to rise about that. But it's not necessarily narcissistic or terrible when they struggle and succumb to jealousy for a while. It's just a bump in the road, a tricky season that w…

I am very sorry about your BIL. That's one of the hardest things there is. I was lucky. There were concerns I might have a malignant tumor but the biopsy showed that it was all benign. The experience was scary, though, and it made me see, cliche as it sounds, how very beautiful life is. That eased my baseline anxiety. I hope that you can draw strength from the others who are sorrowing with you.

Like others have said, exercise and diet help a lot. For me, I sometimes get anxious because I am avoiding tasks. The procrastination makes me feel guilty, which in turn makes me anxious. So when I start feeling anxious it makes more sense for me to get my tasks done, rather than to try and relax. I had a major health scare this year which actually helped my anxiety. It made me confront the scary side of life. Thankfully it all turned out to be nothing, but it did help my anxiety.

I think one of the best things you can do for your relationship is to figure out a way to bring joy into your life. So yes, hang out with your girlfriends, enjoy your kids, read good books, etc etc. I think when your husband sees you happy, he might feel a little happier and more hopeful himself.

Have you asked him what he wants? What would make him happy? I think it's lovely that you're playing video games with him and watching sports together. I think you should keep that up as far as possible. At the same time I think you should stop beating yourself up. It sounds like you've been dealing with a lot too and frankly he HAS let you down a few times. That's okay. That happens in a marriage. People disappoint each other. You'll find a way to forgive him eventually. It's okay to be upset f…

I hope that you are okay. First thing I'd suggest is looking into some form of treatment for your self harming urges. Personally if I texted my partner that I was thinking of self harming, I'd want a little more response than that. I am guessing you chose to be with an older man because you want to feel pampered and cared for. Now, it seems like you're realizing that might not be realistic with this guy. I don't know. Maybe talk to him. Maybe think about all the things he DOES do for you. Still.…

I think you should be careful-- for me, it would be hard to forgive that kind of name calling. But that's me. I'm a slob at heart too. What helps me is getting into a routine -- turning on a podcast or some music and spending even 20 minutes picking up the house makes a huge difference.

I think there's something to this. Of course this is a very extreme example. But still, the single income family comes with a lot of problems. In many parts of the country, the cost of living is so high that a man has to work very long hours at a high pressure job to earn enough for the family. This isnt good for family life, and it causes lots of stress for anyone. Yes, there are exceptions, of course.

Looks! I mean, of course neither answer is right. You need to look for a man who you adore, who you love spending time with, who shares your values, etc etc etc. But if you're really hesitating between looks and money then obviously go for looks. You can always earn your own money. And you need a man who you're attracted to. Otherwise, what's the point?

As a woman, I don't think it's really useful to read men's advice to other men. I don't think you should be listening to Rollo's podcasts and then wondering why your man isn't living up to Rollo's plans. That kind of podcast is delivered in a very specific tone and shouldn't be treated as an iron-clad rule. If you think your man looks good, great. Hold onto him.
