This might be splitting hairs here, but he's not likely a combat vet. As far as I understand, a Combat Action Badge, is awarded to soldiers in roles which are not directly involved in combat (often referred to as nonners by actual combat troops). While the roles are integral to a war effort they are non combat and range from clerks to medical staff to mechanics, etc. Actual combat soldiers are awarded a Combat Infantry Badge. First off, ditch identity politics as a whole. Don't apologize for groups. And don't worry about how to act in certain groups. Be an individual, apologize for yourself, only when warranted. Insist that others recognize you as an individual, not as belonging to a victimized group. This goes for all of us...

The first rule when talking to police when you are a potential suspect: Don't talk to the police. "I'm sorry, on the advice of my attorney, I don't answer questions." Giving them a statement of any kind without an attorney is really no different than representing yourself in a criminal trial. You don't know what you are doing. Any statement you give them is more likely to be used against you, than vindicate you. On top of that, I would just flat refuse to cooperate with glorified campus security…
