Yeah, you pretty much have to wash your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher to get the food particles off. This is only true if your dishwasher is absolutely shit-tier or broken, it's never been the case IME. A dishwasher also saves water compared to washing by hand (uses ~4 gallons for a full load) unless you're extremely conservative with the amount of water you use while hand-washing.
