Yeah, I meant for criminal trials. Apparently Oregon and Louisiana will even convict you in a criminal case without unanimity (with as many as 2 jurors dissenting). Still far more than a simple majority, but nonetheless I wouldn't want to live in those states. The other 48 states require unanimity, and before a 1972 Supreme Court ruling, all states did.

As far as I know, there is no way you can legally renounce your responsibility as father, even with her acquiescence, unless you find another chump who is willing to marry her and adopt the child. I would tell her I'm not interested in being a father at this point in my life, but try to stay on good terms with her, to put off the inevitable for as long as possible.
